Bovine Vets “Infected” With HPAI?

The latest on bird flu?
Cow vets were tested for the presence of antibodies to this bird killing disease, and, by golly, were found positive.
As a past dairy vet, I dug deeper when I heard this, and there’s a lot there. Let’s dive in.
So, Are They Dead or What?
Here’s the actual report from the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Some testers crashed a national vet meeting (the annual meeting of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners) and offered attending vets a $50 gift card to roll up their sleeves for a blood draw.
And guess what?
150 got tested, cow vets from the US and Canada
82 practiced in states known to have HPAI positive herds
25 worked with dairy cattle with known or suspected “infections”
3, sum total 3, had antibodies to bird flu.
Most significantly, of those three (2% of the test group)…
“None of the practitioners with positive serology results reported respiratory or influenza-like symptoms, including conjunctivitis…”

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
There are few things I enjoy more than very long airplane rides; I know, I’m an odd duck on this topic. In fact, I’m probably the only one on the flight that is disappointed when the Captain announces that we will be landing early. Air travel gives me a sense of total freedom. It allows me to clear my thoughts and focus on projects with deadlines. I haven’t traveled much in the last few years, and this trip is mostly for my mental health.
You may have heard me talk in the past about why I like to fly so much. I always select a window seat and spend much of the flight watching the topography change far below and taking in the World the Lord has made.
Sometimes, I see a car driving on a road. I imagine the driver, the kids, and the dog inside. From 30,000 ft, the car is a microdot, and its inhabitants are nanodots. And yet, God is with them. He loves them. He cares about what they are thinking, doing, feeling, and believing. From 30,000 ft, all my problems seem much smaller—and I feel much closer to God.

The Price of Eggs…?
Abandon culling. It’s outdated, unnecessary, ineffective, and costly

The price of eggs has been in the news lately.
Between March 2016 and 2022, the average cost for a dozen eggs had been below $2.00 USD. Beginning in 2022, the cost of a dozen eggs doubled to around $4.00 per dozen. As of January 2025, the average cost of a dozen eggs was at an all-time high at $4.95, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
The pandemic and inflation contribute to rising egg prices, but the real culprit is indiscriminately killing millions of chickens and ducks due to an outbreak of H5N1. The current outbreak started in early 2022 and quickly grew, possibly due to widespread testing. More than 166 million chickens, turkeys, and waterfowl across the country have been killed since January 2022.
Are we doing anything meaningful other than decimating the food supply and our food budgets?
