Tylenol is one of the most common medications in America. It’s recommended in doctors’ offices, handed out after childhood vaccinations, stocked in nearly every medicine cabinet, and trusted by millions of parents. Dr. William Parker believes families deserve to know there is far more scientific debate surrounding this drug than most have ever been told. His research asks a question that every parent should hear before giving another dose: Have we been given the complete story?
If that’s true, parents should be concerned. Physicians should be asking harder questions. Informed consent doesn’t begin after concerns become impossible to ignore. It begins the moment a medication is recommended. Dr. Parker believes the scientific literature surrounding acetaminophen deserves far more discussion than it has received, and he challenges listeners to consider whether confidence in one of the world’s most commonly used drugs has outpaced the evidence used to support it.
Dr. Parker is not an activist or a social media personality. He’s a career scientist who spent more than twenty-seven years at Duke University before continuing his research at the University of North Carolina. His book, Tylenol and Autism: Evidence, Scientific Blunders, and Medicine Gone Wrong, brings together what he describes as thirty independent lines of scientific evidence supporting his hypothesis that acetaminophen exposure may contribute to regressive autism in susceptible children. More importantly, it asks how scientific conclusions become accepted, why conflicting evidence can receive little attention, and whether today’s medical culture still encourages honest scientific debate.
Throughout this conversation, you’ll hear why Dr. Parker believes susceptibility matters, why he argues several influential studies deserve a second look, and why he says the most important questions have never been fully answered. You’ll also hear what happened after he published findings that challenged accepted thinking and why he believes protecting scientific inquiry is just as important as protecting scientific consensus.
Whether you are raising children, caring for grandchildren, practicing medicine, or simply trying to understand how medical recommendations become accepted around the world, this conversation offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to hear a scientist explain his work in his own words. You may agree with Dr. Parker. You may not. Either way, you’ll come away with a much deeper understanding of one of the most controversial questions in modern pediatric medicine and why it continues to generate debate years after many believed the discussion was over.
The interview opens the door. The book takes you much further. Together, they invite you to examine the evidence and decide for yourself.
Meet our Guest
Dr. William Parker has spent more than three decades studying the biology that shapes human health. After earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska, he devoted more than twenty-seven years to research and teaching at Duke University before continuing his work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research has focused on immunology, metabolism, the microbiome, inflammation, and the biological mechanisms that influence disease.
Around 2015, Dr. Parker began investigating whether acetaminophen exposure early in life could contribute to regressive autism in susceptible children. That work eventually led to his book, Tylenol and Autism: Evidence, Scientific Blunders, and Medicine Gone Wrong, where he examines what he describes as thirty independent lines of scientific evidence while exploring the larger question of how medical consensus is formed, challenged, and defended.
