The Tenpenny Files with Dr. Mark Sircus

What changed inside your body before the cancer appeared?

Most people hear the word cancer and immediately start asking about the tumor. Where is it? How big is it? Has it spread? What treatment comes next? Dr. Mark Sircus, author of Natural Oncology: A Biological Terrain Approach to Cancer – Understanding the Why of Cancer and the Natural Ways to Address It, wants to start earlier and look at what may have been changing in the body long before there was anything visible on a scan.

That is where the discussion gets interesting, because Sircus connects cancer to things many people may never have thought to put in the same conversation. He talks about cellular energy and what happens when cells are no longer functioning the way they should. He places enormous importance on magnesium, not simply as another nutrient, but because of its relationship to ATP and the basic energy systems every cell depends on. He also explains why a conversation about oxygen cannot ignore carbon dioxide, and why the way those two gases interact may matter more than most people realize.

For anyone who has ever thought, “I take vitamins, I eat fairly well, I feel okay, so I must be fine,” this is where the interview may make you start asking different questions. What is your mineral status actually like? Are your cells getting what they need to make energy efficiently? Are there deficiencies you would never know about until something starts going wrong? And how many people wait until they are sick before they ever think to ask?

Sircus also brings iodine into the discussion and explains why he believes it matters far beyond the thyroid. He connects mineral status, mitochondrial function, glutathione and detoxification in a way that makes the idea of “terrain” much easier to understand. If the body has been operating for years with depleted minerals, poor cellular energy and increasing toxic burden, what does that do to the environment around the cell over time?

That question becomes harder to dismiss when we start talking about the world we live in now. Heavy metals, industrial chemicals, polluted air and water, plastics and other exposures are part of daily life, whether we think about them or not. Sircus believes those exposures matter because the body still has to process what it encounters while trying to maintain normal cellular function. It raises a much more practical question for the rest of us: how much are we doing now to support the body before illness forces us to pay attention?

This is also why I wanted to talk to him about prevention in a broader sense. People usually become intensely interested in detoxification, minerals, cellular health and metabolic function after they receive a frightening diagnosis. By then, they are trying to learn everything at once, usually while afraid. I would much rather people begin understanding these things while they still have the luxury of time, so they can make more informed decisions about what they are putting into their bodies, what they may be exposed to and what they may want to investigate further.

Sircus’s background also makes this discussion different from a purely biochemical conversation. Before his work in natural medicine, he worked in psychology and therapy, and that history shows up when we start talking about what people carry emotionally. At one point he tells me about a question he asks cancer patients: Can you cry? His reason for asking takes us into vulnerability, chronic emotional tension and the possibility that the terrain surrounding illness may involve far more than bloodwork and supplements.

That brought me back to Remarkable Recovery, a book I read many years ago about people who experienced extraordinary recoveries from serious illness. What stayed with me was how often the changes went beyond food and medical treatment. Some people changed unhealthy relationships, dealt with old wounds, forgave people they had been angry with for years or found their way back to God. Those stories stayed with me because they forced me to think about health as something much larger than a diagnosis on a chart.

By the time Sircus and I finish this discussion, the word “terrain” means something very different. It includes the cellular environment, mineral status, energy production, oxygen and carbon dioxide, toxic exposure and the emotional life of the person living inside that body. It also leaves you with questions that are worth asking before there is a crisis. What am I deficient in? What am I being exposed to? Am I supporting detoxification? Am I paying attention to cellular health? Is there something I should be learning now that I do not want to be scrambling to understand later?

His book Natural Oncology goes much deeper into the physiology behind these ideas, while our conversation gives me the opportunity to question him, challenge parts of his thinking and follow the subjects that naturally come up along the way. If cancer has touched your family, or if you simply want to understand more about what may be happening in the body long before a diagnosis, this is a conversation worth hearing.

The tumor may be the point when everyone finally starts paying attention. The more useful time to start learning may be much earlier.

Meet our Guest
Dr. Mark Sircus has spent decades examining chronic disease through what he describes as the biological terrain surrounding it. His work focuses heavily on metabolism and foundational physiology, including magnesium, iodine, oxygen and carbon dioxide balance, bicarbonate, hydrogen, environmental toxicity and cellular energy.

His path into this work is unusual. Before natural medicine, Sircus says he worked as a communication and color psychologist and as a therapist with women who had experienced sexual abuse. That experience continues to influence how he thinks about illness, particularly the relationship between physical health, fear, emotional stress and vulnerability.

Sircus has written extensively about cancer, magnesium, hydrogen medicine and other areas of natural health. His book Natural Oncology: A Biological Terrain Approach to Cancer – Understanding the Why of Cancer and the Natural Ways to Address It expands on the terrain model at the center of this interview and allows him to go much deeper into the physiology than we can cover in one conversation.

08-09-21 Deep Dive PREMIUM – with Jamie Walden

Meet Jamie Walden, of Omega Dynamics. Imbued with matchless passion for all things “adventurous” and “fun”, Jamie’s teen years were filled with significant tumult (injuries, arrests, and choices of near life-long consequence). However, amid the rebellion and ruckus, Jamie continually endeavored to one day earn the title, “U.S. Marine”. After being nominated to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence, and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., where he subsequently secured a nomination to the US Naval Academy, Jamie made the determination to simply enlist in the Marine Corps Infantry and achieve his childhood dream.

After leaving the Marines Corps, Jamie obtained a double major B.S. in Law Enforcement and History. Pursuing a career in Federal Law Enforcement, Jamie was selected as an Intern for the United States Marshals Service, and subsequent recruitment to a “Three Letter” agency. It was then, when Jamie received “the call”, that the Lord began testing and affirming the genuineness of his faith.

After again returning to Iraq in 2014 to serve the Christians suffering under the savage campaign of ISIS, Jamie and his wife Virginia were compelled to surrender their paradigm and follow the Lord into full-time ministry.

“The Mission of Omega Dynamics is this: to teach, train and equip “Those with ears to hear” to stand anew in their rightful place as more than conquerors in a kingdom that cannot be shaken…this generation is literally, eternally dying for us to”
