The government offered John Strand a way to stay out of prison. He turned it down.
That decision became the starting point for Dr. Sherri Tenpenny’s conversation with the author of Patriot Plea: The J Sixth Journey of a Political Prisoner in a Divided States of America. While John Strand first entered the national spotlight after the events of January 6, this interview focuses on what happened after the headlines faded. Faced with a plea agreement that required him to admit to something he says wasn’t true, he made a decision that shaped every chapter that followed. The reasons behind that decision, and the convictions that made it possible, become the foundation for a conversation that reaches far beyond one legal case.
John explains why the principle of agency became central to his life, how his Christian faith influenced the choices he made, and why he believes deeply held convictions must be established long before they are tested. Rather than revisiting familiar political arguments, Dr. Tenpenny asks where those convictions came from, how they were formed, and why they remained intact under extraordinary pressure. The discussion explores the relationship between faith, free will, conscience, and personal responsibility while examining how those ideas influence decisions when every option carries significant consequences.
One of the most compelling parts of the conversation has nothing to do with courtrooms or prison. John reflects on growing up in a stable family, being homeschooled, and learning biblical principles that later became the framework for some of the most difficult decisions of his life. Dr. Tenpenny expands that discussion into the role parents, grandparents, churches, and Christian education play in preparing the next generation to think independently, stand firmly in their beliefs, and recognize that character is often developed long before life demands it.
The conversation also examines constitutional government, civic responsibility, and the responsibilities that accompany individual liberty. Dr. Tenpenny presses John to explain how his faith changed during his time in prison, what sustained him through uncertainty, and why he believes preserving freedom requires more than strong institutions. It requires citizens who are willing to live according to principles that remain unchanged when circumstances become difficult.
Whether you’re interested in Patriot Plea, the legal questions surrounding January 6, constitutional government, Christian faith, or the importance of raising people with the courage to think for themselves, this conversation offers far more than one man’s personal account. It explores how convictions are formed, why they matter, and what happens when truth, conscience, and freedom converge in a single decision.
Meet our Guest
John Strand is an entrepreneur, speaker, author, and longtime advocate for constitutional liberty whose life changed dramatically following the events of January 6, 2021. Formerly pursuing a career in Hollywood as an actor, writer, and filmmaker, he later became widely known for his work alongside America’s Frontline Doctors and his public advocacy for medical freedom before finding himself at the center of one of the most closely watched federal prosecutions in modern American history.
After rejecting a federal plea agreement that would have required him to admit guilt for conduct he maintains he did not commit, John served one year in federal prison while continuing to challenge the government’s case. His legal battle ultimately resulted in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision affecting numerous January 6 prosecutions, followed by the complete dismissal of all charges against him.
His book, Patriot Plea: The J Sixth Journey of a Political Prisoner in a Divided States of America, combines that personal experience with a broader discussion of faith, constitutional government, free will, civic responsibility, and the moral choices that define both individuals and nations. At the time of this interview, John is also a candidate for Congress in Florida’s 19th District, campaigning on constitutional principles, accountability, and restoring what he believes are America’s founding values.
