How many times can Americans be told that the next crisis threatens everything before someone finally asks whether the crises themselves are following a script?
Investigative reporter and nonfiction author John Leake started asking that question after noticing something he could no longer dismiss. The threat kept changing, but the public reaction looked remarkably familiar. Terrorism. Financial collapse. Russian interference. COVID-19. Climate change. Gender dysphoria. Foreign wars. Each arrived with its own language, experts, villains and proposed solutions, yet Leake saw the same psychological machinery operating underneath them.
His new book, Mind Viruses: America’s Irrational Obsessions, is his attempt to understand why.
Leake traces the idea back to Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung’s writings on what Jung called “psychic epidemics,” irrational beliefs and emotional states that can spread through a population almost like contagion. Leake uses the term “mind virus” to describe what happens when fear begins moving faster than reason and people accept ideas they may have considered absurd only a few years earlier.
That is where this conversation becomes uncomfortable.
Because Leake’s argument is not simply that governments make mistakes, journalists get stories wrong, or experts become overconfident. He asks whether fear itself has become one of the most effective tools for directing public behavior.
And history gives him plenty to work with.
Dr. Sherri Tenpenny and John revisit World War I and the staggering human cost of a conflict whose purpose remains debated more than a century later. They examine Dwight Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex and his concern about the growing power of what he called a scientific-technological elite. They move through September 11, America’s subsequent wars, Russiagate, COVID policy and other recent cultural battles.
The subjects are different. What Leake wants people to notice is what happens next.
A threat is announced. Fear rises. An authority promises safety. Extraordinary measures suddenly become reasonable. Enormous amounts of public money begin moving. People who ask inconvenient questions are increasingly portrayed as dangerous, ignorant or disloyal.
Once Leake began recognizing that sequence, he says he started anticipating the next crisis before it arrived.
That observation became one of the forces behind Mind Viruses.
The interview goes beyond the book by letting Dr. Tenpenny challenge Leake on the question that matters most: how can someone recognize a mind virus while it is happening rather than years later, when hindsight makes the manipulation easier to see?
His answer begins with an unexpectedly simple question.
Why now?
Why did a threat no one was discussing two weeks ago suddenly become the issue everyone is expected to fear? What evidence supports the urgency? Who benefits from the proposed response? What happens to people who challenge it? And why does public discussion so often collapse into slogans at precisely the moment careful thought matters most?
Leake argues that slogans themselves should make us pay attention. “Trust the science.” “Safe and effective.” The language sounds reassuring because reassurance is the point. A slogan asks for agreement before the underlying argument has been examined.
The larger danger, in Leake’s view, reaches beyond any single political party, administration or ideology. Fear can override the part of the mind that normally asks questions. Human beings evolved to respond quickly to danger, and that instinct once helped small communities survive very real threats. Modern institutions have learned how powerfully that same instinct can still influence behavior.
That leaves us with a far more consequential question than whether John Leake is right about every historical event he examines.
How much of what you believe did you arrive at through careful examination, and how much did you absorb because everyone around you suddenly seemed to believe it too?
The interview offers the architecture of Leake’s argument. Mind Viruses provides the history, documentation and case studies that cannot possibly fit into one conversation. Together, they reveal why he believes America keeps experiencing different versions of the same psychological phenomenon.
His conclusion is not that citizens should automatically reject every warning or distrust every expert. It is that fear should never be allowed to replace investigation.
Because the next crisis will probably look nothing like the last one.
John Leake’s warning is that the script may look almost exactly the same.
Meet our Guest
John Leake is an investigative reporter and nonfiction author whose work combines history, philosophy, medicine and current affairs to examine how institutions shape public understanding.
He studied history and philosophy before moving to Vienna, Austria, where he spent more than a decade working as a freelance writer and translator. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Leake became deeply interested in the public-health response and later connected with cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough. Together they wrote The Courage to Face COVID-19.
Leake also writes investigative analysis through Focal Points, where his work frequently examines medicine, government policy, foreign affairs and the historical context behind current events.
His latest book, Mind Viruses: America’s Irrational Obsessions, looks at what he describes as recurring episodes of mass psychological contagion and asks why societies repeatedly become consumed by fear, slogans and perceived existential threats.
