Dr. Elizabeth Mumper stayed in practice while the country shut down, and what she documented inside pediatric exam rooms did not resemble the story unfolding on television.
Parents were told that children faced extraordinary danger, yet the statistical risk to healthy kids appeared far lower than the fear being projected. While headlines escalated, something quieter was emerging in clinics. Infants born during lockdown began presenting with developmental shifts that did not fit historical norms. Masked interactions altered early neurological input during critical windows. Adolescents screened positive for anxiety and depression at levels that startled even a physician with four decades of experience. Suicide data shifted rapidly. Academic regression deepened as isolation stretched from weeks into months.
As mRNA injections entered pediatric schedules, long-term inflammatory implications remained unsettled, and conversations about informed consent often felt compressed beneath urgency. Spike protein production raised questions that were rarely explored publicly. Early treatment discussions were sidelined. Media messaging intensified. Institutional bodies maintained unwavering positions, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, even as clinical realities continued to evolve.
For a physician who had spent decades treating children with neurodevelopmental disorders, the patterns felt familiar. Vaccine injury history, inflammatory burden, and autism comorbidities were not theoretical constructs. They were lived clinical experience. What she was observing during COVID did not exist in isolation. It intersected with a much longer story about pediatric health, institutional rigidity, and research pathways that had already been contested for years.
Now the conversation expands further into the future direction of autism research and the role of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, where decisions made today may shape an entire generation of children tomorrow.
The lockdowns ended.
The policies shifted.
But the children who lived through it are still facing the consequences and walking into exam rooms.
Meet our Guest:
Dr. Elizabeth Mumper, MD, has practiced pediatrics for forty-four years with a special interest in children with neurodevelopmental problems and complex illnesses. She is known for approaching medicine as a detective, carefully examining a child’s history to uncover root causes rather than managing surface symptoms.
Her experience includes directing pediatric education for physicians in residency, serving as medical director for the Autism Research Institute, and teaching clinicians in twenty-one countries and throughout the United States. As COVID emerged, she watched with growing concern as pandemic management decisions from government authorities produced severe unintended consequences for children and adolescents.
She works with the Front Line COVID Critical Care Alliance and Children’s Health Defense.
