Sugar Is Poison In Disguise

It’s sugar season once again. You can feel it in the air – and in the aisles of every grocery store in America. From Halloween candy overload to the sugar-laced celebrations of Christmas, then Valentine’s Day with its pink and red boxes of chocolates, and Easter with those shiny foil-wrapped bunnies and creme-filled eggs – it’s an endless parade of sweetness.

We call it “holiday cheer,” but in reality, it’s more like a national sugar binge.

Sugar suppresses the immune system – something we can’t afford to ignore, especially as we move through the colder months when viruses make their rounds. Yet, most people have no idea just how much sugar they’re consuming, or how deeply it’s affecting their health.

I’ve written about this before in Eye on the Evidence, but it bears repeating: the average American consumes about 57 pounds of sugar every single year. That’s not a typo. Fifty-seven pounds – enough to fill an entire suitcase.

It’s astounding. And it’s not just the desserts and obvious sweet treats doing the damage. Sugar is hiding everywhere – in salad dressings, ketchup, sauces, granola bars, yogurts, breads, and even “healthy” protein shakes. It’s added to nearly three-quarters of all packaged foods on the shelves. That’s why I call sugar the sweetest poison in disguise – it looks harmless, it tastes divine, but inside the body, it slowly erodes your health from the inside out.

Does Sweetness Have A Hidden Cost?
Let’s take a moment to think about what sugar does in your body. When you eat sugar, your blood glucose rises – that’s normal and necessary. The problem starts when your body is bombarded with sugar day after day, meal after meal, drink after drink. The pancreas works overtime to pump out insulin, trying to usher that sugar into your cells for energy. But eventually, your cells stop responding – a condition called insulin resistance.

That’s the first domino to fall.

From there, a cascade of issues follows: weight gain, inflammation, fatigue, brain fog, and eventually diabetes. And diabetes is not just about “high blood sugar.” It’s a systemic breakdown that affects nearly every organ in the body — your heart, your kidneys, your nerves, and yes, your brain.

Does Sugar Sabotage the Brain?
We often think of the brain as separate – an ivory tower sitting above the rest of the body. But it’s not. It’s directly tied to your metabolic health. And sugar is a silent saboteur.

Sugar is, indeed, the brain’s main source of fuel. The neurons in your brain run on glucose. Without it, you can’t think clearly, concentrate, or stay alert. That’s why your brain gives you that little “reward” when you eat something sweet – dopamine, the feel-good chemical, floods your system. It feels good… at first.

But here’s the problem: too much sugar for too long damages the very system it fuels.

Chronically high blood glucose levels interfere with the communication between different regions of the brain. These neural connections are vital for memory, focus, and emotional regulation. When sugar levels swing wildly up and down, your brain struggles to maintain those connections.

Studies have shown that people with prolonged high blood sugar – even in the “pre-diabetic” range – experience faster brain aging. The gray matter literally shrinks. That’s not an exaggeration. MRI scans have shown that elevated blood glucose can cause brain atrophy, especially in regions responsible for learning and memory.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Too much sugar contributes to small-vessel disease, a condition where the tiny blood vessels that feed the brain become stiff and narrow. The result? Reduced blood flow, oxygen deprivation, and over time, cognitive decline. This process can eventually lead to vascular dementia, a devastating condition where a once-sharp mind begins to fade.

If you’ve ever experienced that “sugar fog” – the sluggish, unfocused feeling after a heavy meal or a dessert binge – that’s your brain giving you a small preview of what too much sugar does on a larger scale.

Does Sugar Cause An Emotional Roller Coaster?
Sugar doesn’t just harm the body – it hijacks your emotions too.

Have you ever noticed how you crave something sweet when you’re stressed, sad, or tired? That’s not an accident. Sugar lights up the same reward pathways in the brain as addictive drugs. It creates a cycle of need, relief, and crash – and just like any addiction, the highs get shorter, and the lows get deeper.

In fact, sugar has been shown to affect serotonin and dopamine balance – the very neurotransmitters that regulate your mood. It’s no surprise that people struggling with anxiety or depression often report intense sugar cravings. The body is literally trying to self-soothe through chemistry.

But the “comfort” comes at a cost. The more you feed those cravings, the more dependent your brain becomes on quick sugar hits. It’s a biochemical trap that leaves you drained, irritable, and foggy-headed.

Your Immune System on Sugar
Now let’s bring it back to immunity – because this is where things get especially serious.

Research has shown that just one teaspoon of sugar can suppress the immune system for several hours. Imagine what happens when that sugar load is multiplied by dozens of teaspoons throughout the day – sodas, lattes, cereals, energy bars, snacks, sauces, and desserts.

Your white blood cells, the very army that protects you from viruses and bacteria, become sluggish and less responsive. Your body becomes more vulnerable to infections, more prone to inflammation, and slower to heal.

That’s why I call sugar a Trojan horse in your diet. It sneaks in quietly and disarms your defenses from the inside.

Can We Turn It Around?
Absolutely. The good news is that your body is incredibly resilient. Once you start reducing sugar intake, your blood chemistry begins to normalize within days. Insulin sensitivity improves, inflammation decreases, and your energy levels become more stable.

But you need tools – because let’s be honest, cutting sugar is hard. It’s not just about willpower. It’s about balancing your body’s chemistry so those cravings don’t control you. We need to support a  healthy blood sugar balance naturally – helping you avoid those dangerous spikes and crashes.

There’s no magic pill – and no magic injection like Ozempic, either. You need a support system to help your body do what it’s designed to do – maintain equilibrium. When your blood sugar stays steady, your energy stabilizes, your cravings calm down, and your brain functions more clearly.

There are some simple ways to regain control.
  • Read labels religiously. Sugar hides under dozens of names – maltose, dextrose, fructose, syrup, concentrate, cane juice, maltodextrin, and more. If it ends in “-ose,” it’s sugar.
  • Eat real food. The fewer ingredients, the better. Fresh vegetables, clean protein, and healthy fats stabilize your blood sugar naturally.
  • Hydrate before you snack. Often, cravings are actually dehydration in disguise. Drink a glass of water and wait ten minutes – the craving may pass.
  • Prioritize sleep. Poor sleep disrupts your insulin balance and makes you crave sweets the next day.
  • Move daily. Even a short walk after meals helps lower blood sugar levels and improves brain function.

Sugar isn’t just about calories or weight – it’s about control. The more addicted we become to sweetness, the less connected we are to real nourishment.

We’re living in a time when chronic disease is skyrocketing, yet much of it can be traced back to lifestyle – and sugar sits at the center of that web. It feeds inflammation, fuels metabolic chaos, disrupts hormones, and clouds the mind.

But awareness is the first step. Once you see it for what it is – the sweetest poison – you can start taking your health back.

So as you move through the next “sugar season,” take a stand for your body and your brain. Choose real food. Read labels. Support your blood sugar balance with natural tools. Your body is always on your side. It just needs you to give it the right fuel – and say “no” to the sweet lies we’ve been sold for far too long.

DR. TENPENNY’S RECOMMENDATION

In today’s world, maintaining balanced blood sugar and optimal metabolism is more important than ever. Stress, processed foods, and environmental toxins can all interfere with the body’s natural ability to regulate glucose. My private label Opti Gluco Fit was created to restore that balance – using a synergistic blend of nutrients that nourish cellular energy, enhance insulin function, and promote total metabolic wellness.

A Natural Approach to Blood Sugar Health
Healthy glucose control isn’t just about numbers; it’s about how your body uses energy. When insulin sensitivity declines, the body struggles to convert glucose into usable fuel – leading to energy dips, cravings, and long-term metabolic strain. Opti Gluco Fit supports your body’s natural metabolic intelligence, helping you stay balanced, focused, and energized throughout the day.

This formula blends scientifically backed nutrients and plant-based compounds to support healthy blood sugar regulation at the cellular level.

Key Benefits

Meet Jamie Walden, of Omega Dynamics. Imbued with matchless passion for all things “adventurous” and “fun”, Jamie’s teen years were filled with significant tumult (injuries, arrests, and choices of near life-long consequence). However, amid the rebellion and ruckus, Jamie continually endeavored to one day earn the title, “U.S. Marine”. After being nominated to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence, and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., where he subsequently secured a nomination to the US Naval Academy, Jamie made the determination to simply enlist in the Marine Corps Infantry and achieve his childhood dream.

After leaving the Marines Corps, Jamie obtained a double major B.S. in Law Enforcement and History. Pursuing a career in Federal Law Enforcement, Jamie was selected as an Intern for the United States Marshals Service, and subsequent recruitment to a “Three Letter” agency. It was then, when Jamie received “the call”, that the Lord began testing and affirming the genuineness of his faith.

After again returning to Iraq in 2014 to serve the Christians suffering under the savage campaign of ISIS, Jamie and his wife Virginia were compelled to surrender their paradigm and follow the Lord into full-time ministry.
