The Hidden Epidemic: Understanding Parasites and Their Impact on Your Health

In modern medicine, we’ve made remarkable progress in understanding and managing chronic diseases, infections, and nutritional deficiencies, yet one area remains surprisingly under-discussed: parasitic infections. This is a hidden threat affecting millions worldwide.

When most people hear the word parasite, they picture something out of a biology textbook or a faraway tropical disease. But the truth is that parasites are everywhere—lurking in food, water, soil, and even on or in our pets. Many individuals, even those living healthy lifestyles, may unknowingly harbor these unwelcome guests for years.

As an osteopathic physician, I’ve encountered countless patients suffering from unexplained fatigue, digestive discomfort, skin issues, or persistent inflammation—symptoms often dismissed or misdiagnosed in traditional medical settings. In many of these cases, parasites were the missing piece of the puzzle.

Why Does Allopathic Medicine Miss the Mark?
Parasites are rarely discussed in mainstream, allopathic medicine. In traditional (allopathic) medicine, physicians are trained to manage symptoms, so that is where the focus often remains on managing symptoms rather than identifying underlying causes. In allopathic medicine, if you report fatigue, you may be tested for anemia or thyroid issues; if you have skin rashes, you might receive a steroid cream. However, few doctors consider parasites as a root cause—especially in developed countries. Routine stool tests often fail to detect them, particularly when the infection is low-grade or intermittent.

This is where osteopathic medicine excels. By targeting root causes and recognizing the presence and multifaceted impact of parasites, osteopathic practitioners provide actionable, lasting solutions. Osteopathic and functional medicine approaches can make a profound difference because they focus on the root cause and consider the body as an interconnected system, so we can identify hidden infections and restore balance naturally.

What Is Parasitism?

Let’s break down what parasites are, how they affect your body, and why it’s essential to understand this silent epidemic. Parasitism describes a relationship between two organisms—one being the host (that’s you) and the other being the parasite, which lives on or inside the host. This relationship is one-sided and you are definitely not the benefactor. Instead, the parasite benefits, while the host often suffers harm.

Parasites are incredibly adaptive. Over millions of years, they’ve evolved to survive in almost any environment. In fact, nearly every living animal species hosts at least one parasite. From tapeworms in livestock to microscopic protozoa in water, parasites are masters of disguise and survival.
For humans, these organisms can enter the body through contaminated food or water, insect bites, or contact with infected soil. And once inside, they can cause a cascade of health problems that often go undetected for years.

How Do Parasites Invade the Body?

Mainstream stories tell us we won’t get parasites unless we trek into the deep jungle, but you don’t need to travel to an exotic destination to become infected. Everyday activities can provide a route for parasites to enter your system:

  • Contaminated Food: Undercooked meat, unwashed produce, or fish can harbor parasite eggs or larvae.
  • Water Sources: Drinking or swimming in untreated or contaminated water is a common cause of infection.
  • Direct Contact: Walking barefoot on contaminated soil or touching surfaces where parasite eggs are present can allow entry through the skin.
  • Insect Bites: Mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects can carry parasites that enter the bloodstream through a single bite.
  • Poor Hygiene: Microscopic eggs can be accidentally ingested if hands aren’t washed properly after using the restroom or handling raw foods.
Once inside, parasites settle in organs such as the intestines, liver, lungs, or even the brain, feeding on your nutrients and releasing toxins into your bloodstream.

Can Parasites Wreak  Havoc on Human Health?
Parasites can affect nearly every system in the body. Their presence often leads to subtle yet persistent symptoms that mimic other conditions, which is why they frequently go undiagnosed in conventional medicine. Below are some of the most common ways parasites disrupt your health.

Digestive Disorders
The gastrointestinal tract is one of the most common targets. Parasites such as Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, or tapeworms can attach to the intestinal wall, interfering with digestion and nutrient absorption. Symptoms often include:
  • Chronic bloating, gas, or diarrhea
  • Cramping and abdominal pain
  • Food sensitivities or intolerance
Over time, inflammation of the gut lining can lead to “leaky gut,” a condition where toxins and undigested food particles leak into the bloodstream, triggering immune reactions throughout the body.

Chronic Fatigue and Nutritional Deficiencies
Feeling tired all the time—even after a good night’s sleep—is one of the hallmark signs of a possible parasitic infection. Parasites consume essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, and zinc, leaving your body starved for fuel. This nutrient theft can result in:
  • Persistent fatigue and weakness
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Difficulty concentrating or staying alert
The longer the infection persists, the more energy your immune system expends trying to control it—creating a vicious cycle of exhaustion.

Skin Conditions
Your skin is often a reflection of your internal health. When parasites release toxins, your immune system may respond with inflammation, histamine release, or allergic-type reactions.
Common symptoms include:

  • Itchy rashes or eczema-like irritation
  • Hives or unexplained redness
  • Acne flare-ups that resist typical treatment
Because these reactions are triggered internally, topical creams rarely offer long-term relief.

Joint and Muscle Pain
Some parasites migrate through tissues, releasing inflammatory substances that can lodge in muscles and joints. This inflammation can mimic autoimmune conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia, leaving patients in chronic pain with no clear diagnosis.

Uncontrollable Food Cravings or Weight Changes
Parasites are remarkably skilled at manipulating your metabolism. Some feed on glucose, increasing sugar cravings, while others rob you of nutrients, making you feel hungry no matter how much you eat. Depending on the type, infection can lead to either unexplained weight loss (due to nutrient theft) or stubborn weight gain (as the body retains fluid and inflammation increases).

Sleep Disruption and Mental Fog
Because many parasites are nocturnal, symptoms often worsen at night. Itchy skin, restlessness, and insomnia are common. Meanwhile, the toxins they release can affect your brain and nervous system, leading to:

  • Brain fog or forgetfulness
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Mood swings and depression
It’s not “all in your head”—your body is responding to biochemical stress.

Compromised Immune Function
Perhaps most concerning is the long-term toll on your immune system.
Chronic parasitic infections can suppress immunity, leaving you more vulnerable to other infections and even autoimmune disorders. When your immune system is constantly fighting unseen invaders, it may eventually turn against your own tissues—a phenomenon seen in conditions like lupus, thyroid disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Are There Long-Term Consequences of Ignoring Parasites?

Unchecked parasitic infections can quietly erode your health for years. Over time, the chronic inflammation they cause can damage major organs such as the liver, lungs, and heart.

Certain parasites—like Schistosoma or Plasmodium (which causes malaria)—can lead to organ failure, internal bleeding, or systemic infection. In rare cases, parasites that invade the brain, such as Toxoplasma gondii, have been linked to neurological disease and even coma. Ignoring these infections doesn’t make them disappear—it allows them to multiply and wreak deeper havoc on your body.

How Can I Protect Myself?

The good news is that parasitic infections are treatable—and often preventable. Here are practical steps you can take:

Practice Safe Food Habits: Cook meats thoroughly, wash produce carefully, and avoid raw seafood unless from a trusted source.

Drink Clean Water: Use filtered or boiled water when traveling or if local supplies are questionable.

Maintain Good Hygiene: Wash hands frequently, especially after handling animals or soil.

Support Gut Health: A strong digestive system—with healthy levels of stomach acid and probiotics—is your first defense against parasites.

Seek Professional Evaluation: If you experience persistent unexplained symptoms, consider testing with a practitioner familiar with parasitic infections and functional gut health.

Parasites may be silent invaders, but the damage they cause is anything but quiet. Recognizing their impact—and addressing them early—can mean the difference between chronic suffering and vibrant health.

I urge you: listen to your body’s signals. Don’t dismiss persistent fatigue, digestive discomfort, or unexplained skin problems as “normal.” These could be your body’s way of asking for help.
The path to healing begins with awareness. By understanding and addressing parasitic infections, you can restore balance, boost your immunity, and reclaim the energy that is rightfully yours.

Meet Jamie Walden, of Omega Dynamics. Imbued with matchless passion for all things “adventurous” and “fun”, Jamie’s teen years were filled with significant tumult (injuries, arrests, and choices of near life-long consequence). However, amid the rebellion and ruckus, Jamie continually endeavored to one day earn the title, “U.S. Marine”. After being nominated to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence, and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., where he subsequently secured a nomination to the US Naval Academy, Jamie made the determination to simply enlist in the Marine Corps Infantry and achieve his childhood dream.

After leaving the Marines Corps, Jamie obtained a double major B.S. in Law Enforcement and History. Pursuing a career in Federal Law Enforcement, Jamie was selected as an Intern for the United States Marshals Service, and subsequent recruitment to a “Three Letter” agency. It was then, when Jamie received “the call”, that the Lord began testing and affirming the genuineness of his faith.

After again returning to Iraq in 2014 to serve the Christians suffering under the savage campaign of ISIS, Jamie and his wife Virginia were compelled to surrender their paradigm and follow the Lord into full-time ministry.

“The Mission of Omega Dynamics is this: to teach, train and equip “Those with ears to hear” to stand anew in their rightful place as more than conquerors in a kingdom that cannot be shaken…this generation is literally, eternally dying for us to”
