Do Parasites Cause Cancer?

Do parasites cause cancer? It’s a hot debate, and the answer is simply not that simple.

There are confounding and confusing factors.

Some parasites do cause cancer. Dr. Paul Marik explains that certain parasites do indeed cause specific cancers. A small number of helminths are firmly-established human carcinogens. The clearest examples are below. These are real, well-defined parasite–cancer associations, but they are geographically specific, biologically specific, and pathologically specific.  This is a very different claim from saying that parasites are the universal root cause of most or all cancers.

  • Schistosoma haematobium → squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, especially in endemic regions with urinary schistosomiasis
  • Opisthorchis viverrini → cholangiocarcinoma in Southeast Asia
  • Clonorchis sinensis → cholangiocarcinoma in East Asia
Dr. Lee Merritt has discussed cases cited in Japanese literature, like the 1999 Japanese case report of a 66-year-old woman with sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma and prior exposure to Japanese schistosomiasis. Pathologic examination found “innumerable eggs of Schistosoma japonicum” in her colon, including in the tumor tissue and lymph nodes. The authors specifically discussed a possible relationship between S. japonicum eggs and development of colon cancer. Japanese researchers also reported a 2001 case of a 68-year-old man with rectal cancer and previous S. japonicum infection. Tissue pathology showed many calcified schistosome eggs in the tissue adjacent to the tumor.

Even though eggs were found in the tumor, these cases do not show that the cancerous tumor itself was a parasite egg sac. That may be where some of the confusion comes from.

Dr. Merritt has also recounted the story of Danish pathologist and 1926 Nobel Prize winner Johannes Fibiger. He examined stomach tumors in rats, thought they resembled parasite “egg sacs,” opened them and found nematodes. Fibiger originally interpreted his experiments as demonstrating parasite-induced cancer. His work won the Nobel Prize, but subsequent research showed the lesions were not evidence that cancers generally consist of parasites.

Chronic parasitic infection and the resulting inflammation have long been investigated as possible contributors to carcinogenesis. Dr. Bryan Ardis has said that 70% of autoimmune cases he saw in his own practice were linked to parasites, and that half of the tumors and polyps he encountered were not cancer. He has talked about rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, Sjogren’s, and even cancer. He has stated that medicine may be missing an underlying cause.

Ivermectin and Parasites

Part of the confusion arises because some antiparasitic drugs — including ivermectin, mebendazole, fenbendazole, and niclosamide — have also shown anticancer effects. This does not mean that their anticancer activity translates to killing hidden parasites. The pathways through which these drugs affect parasites are entirely different from the pathways through which they may affect cancer cells.
I am thrilled to have Dr. Makis teach my September 30 Ask the Expert Masterclass on cancer. He does use traditional antiparasitic drugs like ivermectin as potential cancer treatments. Makis has promoted combinations involving ivermectin, mebendazole, and fenbendazole. His rationale is that these medications disrupt tumor-cell microtubules, glucose utilization, and signaling pathways.

Some antiparasitic drugs genuinely have biological effects on mammalian and cancer cells unrelated to parasites. Mebendazole and fenbendazole, for example, interfere with microtubules—a mechanism that is very similar to established anticancer drugs that also target microtubules.

We’re holding the Sept. 30 masterclass so that we can let Dr. Makis do what he does best—teach. And he will definitely be talking about how certain antiparasitic drugs like ivermectin can be repurposed for their direct anticancer effects.

Cleansing Your Gut Is Not Up For Debate

While the debate over cancer and parasites goes on, one thing is clear: a clean gut is a necessity.

It can be a real challenge to maintain a healthy, balanced gut. With environmental toxins, processed foods, and not enough sleep, your body is constantly exposed to factors that can weaken its defenses. That can create an opening for unwelcome visitors to settle in the gut.

Unwanted microorganisms can disrupt your natural gut balance. These gut invaders can cause unpleasant digestive discomfort, skin reactions, and fatigue as they drain you of energy. Don’t be a host to gut intruders. Para-Shield is a powerful yet gentle herbal cleanse for the whole family. This herbal cleanse helps to remove unwanted microorganisms and restore a healthy balance.

Unexplained digestive problems can be a sign that unwanted microorganisms are present. Herbs such as wormwood, clove, and black walnut hull help to weaken intruders, so your natural defenses can get to work.

Cleansing herbs such as barberry help to expel any unwanted visitors from the body. By eliminating unwelcome microorganisms, you may see improved nutrient absorption and experience more energy.

08-09-21 Deep Dive PREMIUM – with Jamie Walden

Meet Jamie Walden, of Omega Dynamics. Imbued with matchless passion for all things “adventurous” and “fun”, Jamie’s teen years were filled with significant tumult (injuries, arrests, and choices of near life-long consequence). However, amid the rebellion and ruckus, Jamie continually endeavored to one day earn the title, “U.S. Marine”. After being nominated to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence, and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., where he subsequently secured a nomination to the US Naval Academy, Jamie made the determination to simply enlist in the Marine Corps Infantry and achieve his childhood dream.

After leaving the Marines Corps, Jamie obtained a double major B.S. in Law Enforcement and History. Pursuing a career in Federal Law Enforcement, Jamie was selected as an Intern for the United States Marshals Service, and subsequent recruitment to a “Three Letter” agency. It was then, when Jamie received “the call”, that the Lord began testing and affirming the genuineness of his faith.

After again returning to Iraq in 2014 to serve the Christians suffering under the savage campaign of ISIS, Jamie and his wife Virginia were compelled to surrender their paradigm and follow the Lord into full-time ministry.

“The Mission of Omega Dynamics is this: to teach, train and equip “Those with ears to hear” to stand anew in their rightful place as more than conquerors in a kingdom that cannot be shaken…this generation is literally, eternally dying for us to”
