Maximize Your Microbiome

The human body is an amazing thing, and even more amazing is the complex community of bacteria called the human microbiome. While most people associate bacteria with disease, our bodies have trillions of beneficial bacteria that perform crucial functions to maintain overall balance, an optimal state called homeostasis.

The gut is “ground zero” for the microbiome; of the 100 trillion microbes in the human biome, the large majority of them reside in the gut. The gut microbiome impacts nearly every function in the human body, and its benefits extend to the entire immune system.

In order to have a normal immune system, you must have a healthy gastrointestinal microbiome. Disruptions in the microbiome, particularly in childhood, have been linked to the development of multiple inflammatory conditions and allergies including eczema and asthma.

A healthy gut microbiome dictates your overall state of health and even your longevity, but your microbiome is constantly changing as it adapts to the ever-changing environment. The foods we eat, sleep quality and duration, age and stress level all drive changes in the microbiome. At any given time, the microbiome can be in a relatively optimal or relatively poor state of health.

It’s important to make smart lifestyle choices, and one of those involves taking a great supplement to support the microbiome. The ideal supplement has a broad spectrum of probiotics as well as a prebiotic. What is a prebiotic?

Prebiotics are plant fibers that act as a fertilizer to assist the growth of of healthy gut bacteria. Prebiotics are found in many vegetables and fruits, it’s just that most of us don’t get enough of those foods in our diet on a regular basis, so a supplement is ideal.
